Lights, Camera, Interaction! Elevating Your Website's Presence

I was having a conversation with a colleague in the web design space. We got together to chat and of course like the website geeks we are we had such a fruitful discussion about things in the website industry space.

In chatting the topic of “business owners continually paying for a website they are not actively using it” came up. And one thing we noticed is that business owners are willing to keep paying for a website, weather that is hosting or a maintenance package and making tweak after tweak but never actually actively using it as a tool in their business.

Some abandon it altogether, yet expect it to magically bring in website traffic. That’s when I realized and said to them “People aren’t invested in their own website but expect others to be invested in it.” So I had to write that down lol

Anyway…I’m sorry to break it to ya, but it doesn’t work like that. So I wanted to share a couple things you need to consider:

1) Treat your digital storefront the same way you would your physical storefront

Imagine having a physical store but never bothering to promote it, update the displays, or engage with customers who walk through the door. Unfortunately, this scenario plays out way too often in the digital realm. Business owners invest time, money, and effort into creating a website, only to leave it stranded in the vastness of the internet, hoping for the best.

2) Actively promoting your website is crucial

The key to a successful online presence lies in active promotion. Posting your website link on social media isn't enough; it's about crafting compelling narratives that invite your audience to explore. Regularly updating your audience on your website's features, offerings, and any exciting developments not only keeps them informed but also sparks curiosity.

3) Your website should not FEEL like a template

You need to ensure your website is engaging. I see too often, websites that feel like a template. Nothing is wrong with a template but shouldn’t feel like one. It's not just about aesthetics; it's about functionality and relevance. It should feel current and not dated. I shouldn’t be wondering if the business is still active.

Treat your website like a living entity that’s constantly evolving to meet the changing needs of your audience. Regularly updating content, introducing new features, and seeking feedback can turn a static website into a dynamic business hub that keeps visitors coming back for more.

4) Show, don’t just tell.

Take your audience on a journey through your website. Walk your audience through the use of your website. We all know by now that video is a powerful tool to showcase the functionality, benefits, and unique aspects of your online space. Use live video and walk persons through using the website. This breaks down the resistance to give your website/ online shop a try for first time buyers or buyers who are using the website to purchase for the first time.

5) Clean the windows and sweep the floors

Consistency is the secret sauce in the recipe for a successful website. Regular updates, social media mentions, and engagement efforts create a rhythm that resonates with your audience. Neglecting your website and expecting it to perform like a well-oiled machine without your active involvement is a recipe for disappointment.

In Conclusion

Your website is a valuable asset that requires continuous nurturing. When you give it the love, care and attention it deserves, it will then give back to you. Essentially you reap what you sow.

So by actively promoting it, engaging with your audience, and showcasing its features through various mediums, you not only enhance its performance but also convey your commitment to providing an exceptional online experience.

Remember, if you're not invested in your own website, it's unlikely that others will be either. It's time to shine a spotlight on this neglected asset and watch it become a driving force for your business success.
